HIGHLIGHT: BE WELL CONVERSATIONS FUNDRAISING EVENT
I often say that “when women support each other anything is possible.” I lived this recently after a brief introduction to Jan Owen AM Co – Founder and Chair at Be Well Urban Wellness Retreat in Hawthorn.
After a brief introduction to Jan, where I shared that my son and I were running the New York Marathon to fundraise for the Women’s Sports Foundation, Jan was immediately onboard with support. We discussed what an event could look like and just like that, on Tuesday 12th of September, 2024, Jan led the conversation with me and dynamic two-time Iron-woman and renowned speaker, Holly Ransom, to a packed audience including high performance athletes, leading businesswomen, friends and colleagues.
Be Well Urban Wellness Retreat
I have been a member of Be Well Wellness Retreat since this beginning of the year as I began my physical preparation to run the New York Marathon on November 3rd, 2024. I was drawn to the Be Well offering because of its wholistic approach to health and wellbeing, incorporating state of the art fitness, strength, and recovery offerings. But what set Be Well apart is its inclusiveness; it feels that every element has been considered and designed with the intention of giving the customer an experience where they feel safe, comfortable, and welcomed.
Every time, I leave Be Well after a workout or recovery session; I feel refreshed and ready to face the world with a renewed sense of vitality.
The Cause
Fifty years ago this year, Sporting Legend and Gender Equity Trailblazer, Billie Jean King founded the Women’s Sports Foundation to create leaders by providing girls access to sports. To celebrate the 50th Anniversary, fifty runners are participating in the November 3rd 2024, TCS New York City Marathon as #TeamWSF to raise $250,000 to amplify the vital societal impact that is made when girls and women play sports. My son Campbell and I are the only two Australians representatives on the team.
The Conversation Women + Sport = Full Potential
Our conversation talked through the skills that girls learn through playing sport such as confidence, teamwork, communication, leadership, self-belief, and resilience.
Jan highlighted the Her Sport research which demonstrates that:
94% of women in executive management positions have a background in sport
91% of women in leadership roles say that skills they’ve developed through sport were important to career success and that
88% of women in leadership roles say the skills they learned through sport can be easily transferred to the boardroom.
In addition to these attributes, the social aspect of sport for women and girls as part of a community shone through last night.
Until next time,
Brigette
Ps. I’m making a dream come true! I’m running in the New York Marathon (with my son) on Sunday 3rd of November, 2024. It’s all in support of the Women’s Sports Foundation on their 50th anniversary; one of the first organizations to recognise the powerful connections between sports access, equity and society. WSF amplifies the vital societal and cultural impact that is made when girls and women play sports. So many great sponsors and donators have jumped on board, like Luxury Escapes. Will you donate a few dollars to support me and this worthwhile cause too? Learn more and donate here.
